VISTA, Calif. – Fifteen years ago this week, the Cleveland Browns traded up in the NFL draft to select a player who called himself “The Chosen One.”
His name was Kellen Winslow II, the sixth overall pick. He was arguably more gifted athletically than his father, a pro football Hall of Famer. He also soon became the highest paid tight end in NFL history with a contract worth up to $40 million. But after nine seasons in the league, Winslow, 35, now sits in a jail cell here considering a series of difficult choices that will help determine whether he spends the rest of his life in prison.
One of the biggest involves his brain: Should he make the case that he’s lost his mind?
Since March of 2018, he’s been accused of a string of bizarre crimes involving women over 53, including two rapes, exposing his genitals to a third woman and masturbating next to a 77-year-old woman in a hot tub in February.
His attorney, Marc Carlos, told a San Diego County judge last week that it was “very important” for Winslow to “do everything necessary as to the mental aspect of this to decide whether or not that’s a defense” to present to a jury at trial.
