More than a dozen high ranking South Bay school district officials were charged Friday with bribery, corruption and taking part in a “pay to play scheme” involving school construction projects.
SweetwaterArraignmentFacing a judge on Friday, over 15 defendants, current and former South Bay school district officials, with 15 separate attorneys, entered pleas of “not guilty,” one by one.
Sweetwater Union High School District board member Pearl Quinones, feeling optimistic, had this to say to reporters: “We’re going to go all the way thought this and we are going to win.”
The officials are accused of corruption and taking bribes by accepting gifts in exchange for votes on lucrative construction contracts.
Charged in two indictments by grand jury, the school officials are from Sweetwater Union High School, San Ysidro School District And Southwestern Community College District. The prosecution alleges the “pay for play” scheme went on for years, with defendants regularly accepting expensive meals and trips.
