Marc Carlos Law, APC attorney Marc Carlos defends biotech executive, Hans A. Petersen, stating Petersen was in a state of confusion during the shootings on Sept. 18, 2013, likely induced by the aftereffects of a seizure and a combination of prescription medications and alcohol.
He strengthens his case by noting the defendant could not remember the events that occurred shortly after he was arrested at his estranged brother-in-law’s house, where he shot his brother-in-law in the stomach. The brother-in-law was able to fight of the defendant’s attacks and captured majority of the incident on his home security camera.
“There’s no way you can look at that video and say that person is not acting irrationally,” Carlos told the jury during his closing argument in San Diego Superior Court. “There’s something other than normal to describe his conduct.”
Petersen, 50, faces three counts of premeditated attempted murder in connection with the shootings that wounded Steven Dowdy, a UC San Diego cancer researcher who was involved in a business venture with the defendant called Traversa Therapeutics, and Ron Fletcher, the brother of Petersen’s estranged wife.
