Mr. Carlos has been lead trial counsel in twenty four homicide cases, including two capital cases with factual scenarios that range from signature-style multiple homicides, gang homicides, murder for hire, arson, poison and shaken baby syndrome in San Diego and statewide. Mr. Carlos has particular expertise in “syndrome” defenses and mental defect defenses. Mr. Carlos has successfully presented defenses relating to mental state, controlled substances intoxication, prescription drug interaction and self-defense. In that regard, he has cross examined and presented as expert witnesses over one hundred mental health, forensic medical, ballistics, crime scene, blood spatter and DNA specialists. Mr. Carlos has been successful in gaining acquittals in homicide cases and dismissals of special circumstances allegations at trial and motion stages. No client represented by Mr. Carlos has ever received a death sentence.
